Knowledge is an essential prerequisite for successful
practice of medicine. Without this one would be lost.
Similarly, success at examinations depends on one having a
sound knowledge base. This is the case for all examinations Final MBBS, MBChB,
MRCP part 1, part 2, MRCP PACES, MD, DM, DNB, USMLE, PLAB etc.
Developing a sound knowledge base is similar to building a
pyramid (See ACES for PACES chapter 1)
There are many methods of developing this knowledge base
but the most important method of acquiring this knowledge is by reading books.
I have set out my personal recommendations below:
Anatomy
This is an important subject and it is essential to have
sound background knowledge of this
Anatomy: Regional and Applied
(MRCS Study Guides)
R.J. Last,
Chummy S. Sinnatamby
Physiology
Without knowledge of physiology it would be impossible to
understand clinical medicine
Review of Medical Physiology
(Lange Basic Science S.)
William F. M.D Ganong
Pathology
Use pathology to understand the evolution of clinical
features of disease
Basic Pathology: With Student
Consult Access
Stanley L. Robbins,

,
Ramzi S. Cotran
Pharmacology
You need to know about the drugs you will use on patients
Clinical Pharmacology

Medicine
This refers to the synthesis of all the background
knowledge that you have gained from the above

Clinical Methods
Finally, you need to know how to obtain the relevant
clinical information from patients, analyse this information and communicate
with your patients. This is my endeavour:
